Doctor Charged in Four Deaths

By Lindsay F. Wiley [Bio]

June 26, 2002 - A physician in Port St. Lucie, Florida was charged with manslaughter in the overdose deaths of four patients for whom she prescribed narcotic painkillers and other drugs. Dr. Asuncion Luyao, 60, was arrested in late March on charges of trafficking in oxycodone and several other narcotic painkillers. Fifteen of Luyao’s patients have died from drug overdoses since 2000.

Relatives of one of Luayo’s patients have alleged in a civil suit that Luyao failed to order appropriate medical tests and did not warn the patient about the dangers of combining prescription drugs. Luayo allegedly prescribed 1, 080 doses of drugs for the patient in a 42-day period.

Luyao is free on a $455,000 bond pending trial. According to press reports, prosecutors may file additional charges arising from two or three other deaths as they continue to gather information.
