Class Action Filed Against Maker of "Ionized" Bracelets

By Lindsay F. Wiley [Bio]

January 25, 2003 — A Chicago lawyer has filed a class-action suit against QT, Inc., accusing the company of fraudulently claiming that its "ionized" metal bracelets can relieve arthritis pain. The suit was filed after a Mayo Clinic study concluded that the bracelets had only a placebo effect.

The class is seeking a refund for people who bought the bracelet. Additionally, the suit seeks damages for members who relied on the bracelet to help them and, as a result, failed to seek proper medical treatment. Class representative Donald Casey, 78, says he cut back on his arthritis medication when he began wearing the bracelet.

In the past, the company has claimed that its Q-Ray bracelets, which typically cost between $50 and $150, increase strength and ease pain by pulling excess ions, or electrical charges, out of the body.
