Florida Legislature Debates Prescription Tracking Program By Lindsay F. Wiley [Bio] April 1, 2003 - Proposed legislation supported by Florida Governor Jeb Bush would create a program to track prescriptions for Schedule II, III and IV medications, which include many pain and psychiatric drugs. Purdue Pharma, the Connecticut-based manufacturer of OxyContin, pledged $2 million toward financing a tracking program several months ago when the Florida Attorney General's office ended its investigation into the company's marketing practices. The proposed program would link the state's pharmacies to a computer database to document and track prescriptions of controlled substances. Relevant transactions would be entered into the database by pharmacists. With a patient's permission, doctors and pharmacies would then be able to check a patient's prescription history before writing or filling new prescriptions. State health investigators and law-enforcement officers with active cases would also have access to the information. Unauthorized disclosure of a patient's prescription history would be a felony under the proposed law.
