Private Insurance

Private health insurance comes in many forms. It may be provided under the traditional employer-organized group plan, a discrete policy taken out by an individual or under the Medical Payments coverage of a standard automobile insurance policy. In most cases the key language that determines whether a course of treatment, therapy or drugs will be provided or reimbursed is whether it is "medically appropriate," "medically necessary" or similar. See generally S. Stephen Rosenfeld & Clare D. McGorrian, "Medical Necessity”: The Gateway to Meaningful Health Care Access [HTML].
